Copyright & Takedown

Who this page is for

If you own the copyright in something and you believe it has been posted on GMI Premium without your permission, this page tells you how to get it removed.

If you’re a GMI member wondering what you can and can’t post, you want the Community Guidelines instead. (/community-guidelines/)

Before you write to us

Two things worth checking, because they’ll save you time.

Is the material actually hosted by us? Members are encouraged to share their playing by embedding videos from YouTube rather than uploading to our servers. If what concerns you is an embedded video, the file sits on YouTube, not with us. A complaint to YouTube will remove it everywhere it appears, including here. Tell us as well if you’d like — we’ll remove the embed — but YouTube is where the video itself lives.

Is it a link rather than a copy? If a member has linked to material hosted elsewhere, we can remove the link, but we can’t remove the material. The host can.

If neither applies, or you’re not sure, write to us anyway. We’d rather look at something that turns out to be fine.

How to make a complaint

Email info@gmipremium.com with the heading “Copyright complaint”.

Clause 12 of our Terms & Conditions sets out what your notice needs to contain. ( /terms-conditions/) Please give us:

  • identification of the material and where to find it;
  • your name, address, telephone number and email address;
  • a statement that you believe in good faith the use is not authorised by the copyright owner, its agent or the law;
  • a statement that the information you have given is accurate and that you are the rights owner or authorised to act for them; and
  • your physical or electronic signature.

A URL and a screenshot are the fastest way to help us find something.

If it’s a work in the Guitar Library

The Guitar Library is a separate case from a member post, and clause 10 of our Terms covers it.

The Library holds public domain material, works released under open licences, and arrangements contributed by third parties under permission. Individual works may carry their own attribution or licence conditions, shown alongside the work. Its presence in the Library is not a warranty that it is free of all third-party rights in every territory.

If you believe a work has been included in error, tell us and we will investigate promptly. The same email address applies.

What happens next

We aim to acknowledge complaints within 5 working days and to resolve them within 20, in line with clause 27 of our Terms. In practice, a copyright complaint that looks credible is dealt with the same day.

On receiving your complaint we may remove the material while we look into it. That isn’t a finding against the person who posted it — it’s a precaution, and it’s what clause 12 provides for.

We’ll tell you what we’ve done.

If your material was removed and you think we got it wrong

If something you posted has been taken down and you believe you had the right to post it — you wrote it, you own it, it’s out of copyright, or you hold a licence — email info@gmipremium.com and say so, with whatever you have to back it up.

We’d genuinely rather restore something we removed in error than leave it down. Tell us.

Repeat infringement

Clause 12 of our Terms allows us to close the account of anyone who repeatedly infringes other people’s copyright. We will use it.

What this page is not for

  • Permission to use GMI’s own material. Our courses, notation, recordings, apps and books are our copyright. If you’d like to use any of it, or licence it for teaching, that’s a different conversation — email us and say what you have in mind.
  • General enquiries. Use the contact page.
  • Complaints about behaviour rather than copyright. See the Community Guidelines.

Why we take this seriously

GMI Premium is run by a working guitarist, composer and author. Our own living depends on copyright, so we don’t need persuading that other people’s matters.
