Pentatonic Scales in 5 Positions

Learning and being able to play the five main pentatonic scale patterns is a “must know” as far as guitarists are concerned. The following five patterns that you will learn are often referred to as “the caged system”.

In this first lesson, you’ll learn how to play all five pentatonic patterns in one position. By learning to play the patterns confidently in one fingered position without moving between patterns will give you a solid foundation before moving on to joining the patterns together.

If your pentatonic scale guitar fretboard understanding is limited then this lesson is a must view. The pentatonic scale is used extensively within a wide range of music. This lesson shows how pentatonic scale patterns can be played in five positions across the fretboard in one key utilizing relative major and minor scales.

When we start learning to improvise or take up the guitar and play scales, usually the pentatonic scale is the first port of call. Many guitarists become frustrated as they run out of ideas. This is mainly due to the fact that when we begin to play guitar, we usually play from a visual perspective. This may sound odd, but it is a fact. We look at the patterns and shapes we know and we create other patterns and shapes from these. These are then translated into sounds and ideas that we perform over chord progressions. It takes many years of practice to start hearing ideas derived from scales in a sonic as opposed to visual way.

In this journey, we can help ourselves by knowing more than the usual one pattern. There are five main pentatonic scale patterns that most guitarists eventually learn. The reason for learning these five patterns is that they offer us a single key in five positions. Therefore, we are not regulated to just playing in one position all the time. The other benefit from knowing these five guitar pentatonic patterns is that we get additional visual ideas from the different patterns we learn.
